Update Friday, 3:50 p.m. The National Weather Service has posted a Winter Storm Watch for Central Pennsylvania. The watch will be in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. Details appear below.
The snow storm that hit Central Pennsylvania Thursday afternoon is expected to wind down early Friday morning.
Now, biting, gusting winds are expected to knock us back into the deep freeze.
At 6:30 a.m., State College police say many area roads are still snow covered. The State College Area School District says schools will open on a two hour delay Friday morning because of the weather.
The storm will leave behind about two inches of snow, perhaps three inches in spots. Blowing and drifting snow will be an issue later Friday when the winds begin to pick up.
The National Weather Service has posted a Wind Chill Advisory which will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Saturday.
“Temperatures are probably at their high in the twenties, Friday morning,” says AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines. “I think by this afternoon we’ll see temperatures dip into the lower twenties and by late in the day into the teens. You throw in the wind and it’s going to feel like it’s close to zero or maybe below.”
During the overnight hours winds will be in the 15 to 30 mph range, with gusts up to 40. It will become dangerously cold with the wind chills making it feel like it’s as much as 10 to 20 degrees below zero outside.
We won’t be getting much relief in the days ahead. “The first part of weekend there should be a lot of sunshine,” says Kines. “Saturday’s going to be a cold day temperature-wise, in the twenties at best.”
“Sunday we’re going to be keeping an eye on a storm heading out of the Southwest part of the country. That system could start to bring us snow Sunday afternoon and night. The storm moves away during the day on Monday, but I suspect on the first half of Monday there’s still some snow around.”
How much snow we’ll get remains a question mark, depending on how far north the system tracks. “There’s the potential for at least six inches of snow,” says Kines, adding, “If you’re traveling Sunday afternoon into Monday it’s going to be a slow go.”
Unfortunately there’s no reason to expect much in the way of a mid-winter warm-up. Chilly temperatures are likely for the immediate future.
“Springtime’s not coming anytime soon,” says Kines. “The overall weather pattern is cold weather. If you want temperatures in the fifties or sixties you better head south.”
