The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority disposed of more than 57,000 pounds of household hazardous waste during its annual collection event April 24-25.
A total of 983 vehicles brought hazardous items to the free drop-off, according to the CCRRA. Residents of 32 Centre County municipalities, along with visitors from surrounding counties, participated in the event.
Many participants expressed appreciation for the speed and efficiency with which the event was handled, and for the opportunity to safely and responsibly dispose of hazardous materials from their homes, CCRRA wrote in a release.
“We were happy to wrap up Earth Month with this valued community event,” Mimi Cooper, CCRRA recycling coordinator, said in a statement. “Between the Green Community Partnership Luncheon, Watershed Cleanup Day and now our Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, we are continuing to do our part to help keep Centre County a clean and green place to live.”
MXI Environmental Services of Langhorne once agains served as the event contractor.
The event costs approximately $100,000 and is funded by the CCRRA, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s CHEMSWEEP Program.
CCRRA also received more than $1,000 in donations from attendees to help support its Education Endowment Fund.
The next CCRRA Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event will be held in spring 2027.
