Turning one person’s lost goods into another person’s good fortune.
Instead of collecting dust and rust in storage the lost bikes of Ferguson Township will finally be able to ride the streets again.
Ferguson Township Police donated approximately 70 unclaimed bicycles to Centre County United Way on Tuesday.
The bikes will be sold in a silent auction during the annual Ferguson Township Police Bike Rodeo with all proceeds going to United Way.
“We are very appreciative to Ferguson Township,” says Megan Smith, the communications coordinator for the Centre County United Way. “They’ve been very good to us for many years. Their employees do a campaign each year to donate to our general campaign. This strengthens our partnership.”
This is the first time United Way and Ferguson Township Police are partnering to hold the charity auction.
The proceeds from the auction will be spread across United Way’s 34 partner agencies, including Centre County Women’s Resource Center, The Food Bank of the State College Area and The Arc of Centre County.
The police department’s donation, which was authorized by the state, includes both adult and children bikes. All of the bikes are used and their conditions vary.
The Bike Rodeo will be held on June 13 in the Weis Market Parking lot, 1471 Martin Street in State College at 11 a.m. Auction bidding begins at noon and concludes at 1 p.m.
The event is designed to teach children safe biking skills and give them an opportunity to ride alongside the officers.
