Members of the Hilltop Resident Association plan to turn out in force for tonight’s College Township Meeting. The former residents of the Hilltop Mobile Home Park are anxious to finally face the developer who wants to turn the land they used to live on into luxury student housing.
A rezoning proposal for Hilltop Mobile Home Park, 1275 Pennsylvania Ave., is on the council’s agenda for its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Lafayette, Ind.-based company, Trinitas Ventures, was expected to send a representative to present the proposal to Council at previous meetings but never showed up.
Hilltop residents were given a Feb. 28 move-out deadline, yet are still fighting to keep their land. They’re hoping to convince Council to turn down the rezoning request.
Matthew Rooke, spokesman for the Hilltop Residence Association and design engineer, said Hilltop Resident Association members and their supporters will be “highlighting the value of the land as an established workforce housing community while demonstrating that manufactured home communities can be desirable neighborhoods and a vital bridge between the rental market and traditional home ownership.”
“We are asking the Council to deny the rezoning request outright instead of referring it to the planning commission,” Rooke said. A blog dedicated to the ‘Save Hilltop‘ cause and agenda meeting packet are available.
Should a Trinitas Ventures representative present the company’s proposal Thursday night, it will be the first opportunity the council has to vote on the rezoning request. In December, council members empathized with Hilltop supporters.
“I don’t want to go through a rezoning request any more than anyone does on this council,” said David Fryer, council chairman said at a Dec. 6 meeting.
Representatives from Trinitas Ventures did not return calls for comment.
