Centre County Commissioners on Tuesday advanced applications for state and federal funding to support several public works projects.
College Township is expected to receive $20,000 in Liquid Fuels funds for a pedestrian crossing project at the intersection of East College Avenue and Elmwood Street.
The funds will be used to construct crosswalks and sidewalks connecting to nearby sidewalks at the intersection, where currently pedestrian crossing is prohibited. In 2017, the township received more than $200,000 for pedestrian signals and other associated improvement through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s ‘Green Light-Go’ program for traffic signal upgrades.
Work on the intersection is expected to take place in 2019 and the total estimated project cost is $309,000.
Commissioners also approved an application for $24,250 for resurfacing roads in Burnside Township. Both projects were previously approved by the county for funding and a formal application now will be submitted to PennDOT.
Applications for $441,976 in Community Development Block Grant funding was added to the consent agenda for final approval next week.
Bellefonte Borough will receive $109,514 for safety improvements at Talleyrand Park, including a pedestrian walkway across the railroad bridge as well as walkways and fencing. A portion of the project has already been bid and work is expected to begin soon, according to Matt Milliron, Centre County senior planner.
The county has administered Bellefonte’s CDBG applications since 2015
The remaining $332,462 will be used for construction of a new 100,000 gallon water storage tank in Unionville, near the water treatment facility. The tank will replace two in-ground water storage reservoirs, one of which dates back to the 1920s and the other to the 1930s or 40s, Milliron said.
‘The activity will benefit every resident of Unionville Borough and it eliminates some water system deficiencies and improves the water service,’ Milliron said.
