A Ferguson Township home sustained extensive damage but no one was injured in a fire on Monday afternoon, according to Alpha Fire Company.

Crews were dispatched at about 12:10 p.m. after a passerby reported smoke coming from a home and fire alarms sounding on the 1100 block of West Beaver Avenue. Fire Director Shawn Kauffman, who was first on the scene, found smoke coming from the rear and second floor and upgraded the call to a second alarm, Alpha Fire Captain Rob Nese said.

Firefighters extinguished a fire in the kitchen and then found the blaze had extended into the second floor. Additional crews arrived on the scene and assisted with putting out the fire on the second floor as well as cutting holes in the roof for ventilation. The fire was under control within about 25 minutes, Nese said.

Four residents — two adults and two children — were not at home at the time of the fire. A pet dog got out on its own and was found unharmed, Nese said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Boalsburg Fire Company also responded to assist at the scene and stand by at the downtown State College Alpha station.
