Drivers will need to slow down on a small section of Blue Course Drive in Ferguson Township.

Township supervisors unanimously approved reducing the speed limit from 45 to 35 mph on an approximately half-mile stretch of Blue Course Drive eastbound (heading toward North Atherton Street) between Westwind Drive and the Circleville Road/Teaberry Drive intersection.

The change comes after the Centre Area Transportation Authority agreed to relocated a bus stop closer to the intersection at the request of the township as part of an upcoming road improvement project on Blue Course Drive. Moving the bus stop eliminated the need to install a rapidly flashing beacon.

“One of the concerns that CATA expressed when we moved that bus stop is the speed of vehicles traveling downhill, which would be eastbound on Blue Course Drive from Westwind Drive to Circleville Road,” David Modricker, Ferguson Township public works director, said.

Township engineer Ronald Seybert conducted a traffic study that determined the section of roadway meets the criteria to be posted 35 mph. The speed limit on the remainder of Blue Course after the traffic light at Circleville to Atherton Street is already 35 mph.

The speed limit change will go into effect the week of June 26 and is only for the eastbound section. There is no change to the westbound (toward West College Avenue) speed limit of 45 mph.
