Flooding Closes Roads in Penns Valley

Multiple roads in the Penns Valley area were closed because of flooding after more than 5 inches of rain fell in the area Wednesday into Thursday.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Route 45 between Route 445 (North Street) near Madisonburg and Route 235 near Hartleton in Union County is expected to remain closed until at least 10 a.m. on Friday.

“Due to flooding in the area, the water level reached the underside of a bridge spanning Elk Creek in Millheim Borough,” a statement from PennDOT said. “PennDOT must perform an inspection of this bridge before reopening the highway.”

PennDOT will issue an update after the inspection has been completed. Drivers will follow a detour using Interstate 80 and Route 15.

Route 2011 (Penn Street) has reopened between Penn and Water streets but remains closed between Water Street and Coburn.

Route 445 between Route 45 and Route 192 and between Route 192 and Route 64 was closed but has since reopened.

According to the National Weather Service, Aaronsburg had 5.42 inches, while Poe Valley State Park had 5.28 inches and Spring Mills had 4.5 inches.

Creeks were at minor flood stage as rain subsided late Thursday morning.

Elsewhere in the county, Bald Eagle Creek at the Beech Creek station was at the minor flood stage and crested at 11.5 feet.
