The former New Leaf Initiative coworking space in the State College Municipal Building will be renovated for borough government offices.
Borough council on Monday approved as part of its consent agenda awarding a $171,577 contract for the renovations to JC Orr & Son Inc. of Altoona, which had the lower of two bids received for the project. Funding for the work was included in the borough’s 2023 budget.
Once completed, the third-floor space will be used by the borough’s Department of Equity, Inclusion and Belonging and the Office of Community Engagement, according to a summary provided by acting facilities manager Lance King.
The space — which consisted of open areas and conference rooms with furniture while used by New Leaf — was never fully finished. Work for the renovations will include the creation of new individual office spaces, conference rooms, HVAC and electrical alterations and plumbing expansion.
The nonprofit organization New Leaf Initiative ceased operation of its coworking and events space at the end of 2021 after nearly eight years in the Municipal Building. Its lease with the borough ended on Jan. 1, 2022.
