A new indoor pickleball club has opened for play in the State College area.
The Picklr opened on Sept. 24 at 503 Benner Pike, in the former location of Big Lots. It will hold a grand opening event from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Billed as North America’s fastest-growing indoor pickleball franchise, Picklr’s 27,000-square-foot State College location offers nine dedicated outdoor-surface courts that members can book in advance or walk in for open play.
The courts have pro-grade lighting to prevent shadows and glare, and a custom acoustic design to eliminate distractions, according to the club.
Other features include a pro shop, locker rooms and showers, and a private event area.
Steve Smith, a 1999 Penn State graduate and former Nittany Lion football player, is the owner and operator of The Picklr State College.
“Bringing The Picklr to State College means the community will benefit from the best-in-class indoor pickleball experience offered anywhere,” Smith said in a May news release announcing plans for the club. “I love everything about Penn State. To be back where I went to school and provide a world class home for pickleball, means the world to me.”
Picklr State College is offering special Founders Memberships for $99 a month. Trial memberships are $30 for 15 days, and non-members can book court time for daily fees.
Members get unlimited open play, league and tournament access and exclusive programming, as well as access to other Picklr clubs around the country.
Saturday’s grand opening will include open play, food from Bill Pickle’s Tap Room, a DJ, beat the pros and fastest serve contests, staff and instructor meet and greats and more.
Current hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
