GoFundMe Established for Shooting Survivor

The sole survivor of Thursday night’s shootings in State College has undergone two surgeries at a Pittsburgh hospital, according to a GoFundMe page established to raise funds for her medical expenses.

State College police said Nicole Abrino, 21, was shot in the chest by Jordan Witmer, of Benner Township, at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday inside of P.J. Harrigan’s Bar and Grill, 1450 S. Atherton St. Witmer, who was Abrino’s ex-boyfriend, also shot and killed 62-year-old Dean Beachy and his 19-year-old son, Steven Beachy, whom Witmer did not know. Dean Beachy was pronounced dead at the scene and Steven Beachy died on Friday at UPMC Altoona.

After fleeing the scene, Witmer crashed his car on Waupelani Drive then broke into a Tussey Lane home, where he shot and killed 83-year-old George McCormick before shooting and killing himself.

In critical condition at the time, Abrino was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center then flown by helicopter to UPMC in Pittsburgh.

According to the GoFundMe, Abrino underwent her first surgery upon arrival at UPMC and was stable but sedated. She had a second surgery on Saturday morning.

The GoFundMe has a current goal of $10,000 and as of early Sunday afternoon had raised $1,737.

‘She still has a long journey ahead of her, including the possibility of more surgeries, PT, continued doctors visits and hospital stays,’ the page says. ‘Nicole still has her whole life ahead of her and continues to fight everyday. We are putting together this gofundme to assist her and her parents with the medical bills they will soon be burdened with. Also to help with her parents and older sister who have had to miss work to be by her side in Pittsburgh. Please continue to keep Nicole in your prayers.’

Police said on Friday that they did not yet know what led Witmer to open fire. He and Abrino arrived at the bar at about 8:30 p.m. and about an hour and 45 minutes later walked over to the Beachys, who were seated on the opposite side of the bar, before he started shooting. Chief John Gardner said that Witmer later broke into the McCormick residence at random after crashing his car.

Witmer, who had a carry permit for the gun, had recently completed three years of active duty service in the U.S. Army, relatives told PennLive.com.
