Here’s What to Expect This Week as Atherton Street Work Continues

Drivers will encounter daylight lane closures and travel delays — but no detours — as work continues this week on the latest phase of PennDOT’s Atherton Street project.

For the week of Sept. 12, crews will be working in three areas of North Atherton and South Atherton streets.

Here’s what’s expected:

• Daylight lane closures for sewer line replacement will be regulated by flaggers.

• Two crews will be working between West College Avenue and Railroad Avenue on North Atherton Street. Once work is completed between there, those crews will start working from West Beaver Avenue toward West Nittany Avenue on South Atherton Street.

• A third crew will be working between Westerly Parkway and South Allen Street on South Atherton Street.

• Depending on weather and scheduling, line painting may be performed between West College Avenue and West Beaver Avenue.

Overall work on the latest phase of Atherton Street construction will span from the Curtin Road intersection on North Atherton Street to just past Westerly Parkway on South Atherton Street will include roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings and traffic signals and supports.

The project is expected to conclude in 2024. Work this year is expected to continue until December and then resume in March.

HRI Inc. of State College is the contractor on the $30.7 million.
