The Penn State Lady Lion basketball team saw its season come to a close Friday afternoon with a 82-57 loss to Stanford in the NCAA Sweet 16 at Maples Pavillion in Palo Alto, Ca.
It was an offensively balanced attack by the cardinal. All-American Chinet Ogwumike led everyone on the floor with 29 points and 15 rebounds. Her Stanford teammate Mikeela Ruef pulled down 15 rebounds and chipped in with 11 points.
Penn State was led by Ariel Edwards with 22 points in her final game as a Lady Lion. Dara Taylor added 11 and Talia East contributed 10.
Maggie Lucas, the team’s leading scorer scored six quick points before the Cardinal defense put the clamps on and held Lucas scoreless the rest of the way.
The Lady Lions held a 23-19 lead before Stanford went on a 14-0 run and continued to outscore Penn State throughout the game.
Penn State fought back several times in the second half and cut the lead to 10 at one point. But Stanford players used their speed and a stingy defense to take over the game and cruise to the win.
Penn State finishes the season with a 24-8 record and a third consecutive Big ten regular season title and says goodbye to a senior class that reached 100 wins over the past four years. The class finishes second in Penn State history with a 101-31 record.
