An 81-year man was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a hospital after being shot by a hunter on Saturday in College Township, according to State College police.

Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission responded to the incident and found the man had a bullet wound on the top of his head, according to a news release on Monday. A hunter on the scene said he thought he shot a deer and when he realized it was a person he began rendering aid.

The man underwent surgery at UPMC Altoona and is in stable condition, police said.

Police and the Game Commission are continuing to investigate.
