The massive AAUW used book sale will kick off Saturday at the Snider Agricultural Arena at Penn State.
The four-day sale draws thousands of book lovers every year. The event starts Saturday and runs through Tuesday. Books are sorted into more than 30 categories and displayed on more than 250 tables. Cookbooks, children’s and collectors’ books are continually best sellers.
The event benefits the American Association of University Women – State College branch, which sponsors community programs that benefit girls and women.
“I think its popularity stems from the fact that not only do we sell great books at a great price, but also that so much good is derived from the proceeds,” says Nancy DeWalle, chair with AAUW.
The proceeds turn into grants to Centre County libraries and support projects of other non-profits, including the Centre County Women’s Resource Center, Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Youth Service Bureau, Discovery Space and many others.
AAUW also awards three $5,000 scholarships to Centre County women who are returning to school to complete a degree. The group also supports programs for girls in Bald Eagle, Bellefonte and State College area school districts.
“All of this is made possible by the great support of members of the State College community and the entire central Pennsylvania area,” DeWalle says. “While AAUW forms the backbone of the sale, people from all over Centre County donate their books every year, and the sale could not happen without the many volunteers who help on move-in night and during the sale itself. It is indeed a community effort and everyone in Centre County can be proud of what we’ve accomplished together.”
