Memorial Day Weekend: Schedule of Events

Memorial Day will be celebrated across the State College area with military services, parades, carnivals, musical performances and more. Much of the activity will be centered in Boalsburg, the town where the Memorial Day tradition first started in 1864. There’s a lot going on that you and your family will want to know about. We’ve put together a list of events to help you make plans over the long holiday weekend.

 

Thursday, May 21

Boalsburg Fire Company Carnival

6 p.m. to 10 p.m.: First day of the Carnival

The Boalsburg Fire Company will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, sloppy joes, hot sausage sandwiches, french fries and BBQ chicken. There will also be carnival rides, bingo, and raffles. There is a $15 wristband for the rides. The wristband will be good through the entire five-day carnival.

 

Friday, May 22

Boalsburg Fire Company Carnival

6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

 

Saturday, May 23

Boalsburg Memorial Day Celebration 

5 p.m.: Memorial Day parade. Following the parade the Boalsburg Fire Company Carnival continues until 10 p.m.

Pennsylvania Military Museum

10 a.m. to 4 p.m: “WWII Revisited: Living History Bivouac,” re-enactors will portray field life in the European Theater of Operations

12:45 p.m.: WWII small squad tactical demonstration

 

Sunday, May 24

35th annual Memorial Day run in Boalsburg

8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.: The 3.8 mile course weaves through historic Boalsburg and welcomes both runners and walkers. All race proceeds benefit Boalsburg/Harris Township-area causes including The Boalsburg Military Museum.

VFW Post 5825 State College will perform Honor Guard Services at the following locations:

9:30 a.m.: Pine Grove Mills Memorial, in Pine Grove Mills at the intersection of Pine Grove Mills Road and St. Elmo’s lane

11 a.m.: Gatesburg Church, in Gatesburg at 1924 W. Gatesburg Rd.

Pennsylvania Military Museum

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: “WWII Revisited: Living History Bivouac,” re-enactors portray field life in the European Theater of Operations

12:45 p.m.: WWII small squad tactical demonstration

2:30 p.m.: “Letters from Home: A Serviceman’s Canteen Show,” music, dance and comedy of the 1940s with a choreographed show reminiscent of the era.

Boalsburg Memorial Day Celebration

10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.: State College Area High School Jazz Band

11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.: The Magicians Andy and Elisha will perform

12 p.m. to 1 p.m.: Little German Band will perform

12:30 p.m.: Maypole Dance will take place on the Diamond

1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.: Screaming Ducks band will perform

2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.: State College Community Theatre will preview its performance of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”

2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fire Company Carnival continues

3 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Pure Cane Sugar band will perform

State College American Legion will hold Memorial Day services at these locations:

2 p.m.: Services at Shiloh Church, 801 Benner Pike . There will be a brief prayer, a rifle salute and flowers will be placed on graves.

3 p.m.: Services at Pine Hall Lutheran Church, 1760 W. College Ave., State College. Raising 50 flags, a rifle salute and placing flowers on graves.

 

MEMORIAL DAY, Monday, May 25

VFW post 5825 State College will perform honor guard services at these locations:

10: 30 a.m.: Graysville Cemetery, Graysville Cemetery Road, Spruce Creek

11:30 a.m.: Pennsylvania Furnace Cemetery, located near the intersection of Route 45 and Johnson Road

Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg

11 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Guided museum tours

9 a.m. to 4: p.m.: Allegheny Mountain Region A.A.C.A Car Show, pre-war through modern classic cars on display throughout the grounds of the 28th Division Shrine Complex. It costs $5 for on-site parking

Boalsburg Heritage Museum soup sale

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Museum tours, blacksmith shop demonstrations and soup sale. The menu will consist of ham and bean soup, vegetable soup and bread plus pretzels baked in the museum’s beehive oven.

Boalsburg Memorial Day celebrations

2 p.m. to 6 p.m.: Last day of Fire Company Carnival

5:45 p.m.: Traditional walk from the Diamond to Boalsburg Cemetery.

6 p.m. Services at the cemetery begin.

All residents and visitors are encouraged to join the walk to Boalsburg Cemetery. Captain David Felice, 148th PA Volunteer Infantry, Company C, U.S. will be a guest speaker. Boy Scout Troop 380, Centre County Girl Scouts, the Boalsburg Fire Company Honor Guard and Marine Corps League will also participate in the service.
