The Mount Nittany Elementary School community on Thursday was mourning the loss of 38-year-old teacher Nancy Ulba following her sudden death overnight.
Described by State College Area School District officials as ‘beloved by her students,’ Ulba died in her Ferguson Township home.
Ferguson Township Police Chief Chris Albright said there were no signs of injury or foul play, and that Ulba had reportedly been feeling ill for a few days. Her death appeared to be a result of natural causes, he said, but the cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is completed.
Ulba was a third grade teacher who joined the school in 2017 and ‘made an immediate impact on our school community,’ according to a school district news release.
“Nancy was a wonderful and compassionate teacher, and we will greatly miss her energy and dynamic personality,” Mount Nittany Elementary Principal Mark Feldman wrote in a message to families on Thursday afternoon.
Feldman, Superintendent Bob O’Donnell and Assistant Superintendent Vernon Bock informed faculty of Ulba’s death on Thursday afternoon, shortly before a message was sent to district employees and families. Counselors will be available Friday and next week for students, faculty and staff at the school and elsewhere in the district.
“On behalf of our Mount Nittany community and the entire State College Area School District, I extend my sincerest condolences to Nancy’s family, friends and all who knew her,” O’Donnell said.
