Mount Nittany Middle School Wins Statewide Math Competition

Mount Nittany Middle School repeated as the champion of a statewide math competition.

The Mount Nittany team of Zach Cheslock, Daniel Miller, Tony Tzolov and Jenny Yu took first place at the Mathcounts competition held March 23 and 24 in Hershey. Park Forest Middle School took third place with the team of Julian Kim, Daniel Xu, Evie Zhang and Claire Zheng.

Both teams are coached by Rebekah Sjoberg and Susan Owens.

Individually, Tzolov claimed third place overall and was second in the written competition. Zheng was sixth overall and came in seventh in the written competition. She also was awarded a scholarship as the top female competitor.

Tzolov will be one of the four members of the Pennsylvania team, coached by Sjoberg, that will take part in the national competition May 12-15 in Washington, D.C. ESPN 3 will webcast the Countdown Round oral competition on May 14. 

Mathcounts is a national competitive program to promote mathematics achievement through contests. Pennsylvania has 274 schools and 2,200 students that participate, making it the second largest state for Mathcounts participation.
