Multi-Day Lane Closure Planned for Roadwork on College Avenue in Downtown State College

Part of East College Avenue in downtown State College will be down to one lane for four days and travel delays are expected during excavation and replacement of the concrete bus lane.

The right lane of East College Avenue will be closed between McAllister Street and South Allen Street from Monday, Sept. 28 until Thursday, Oct. 1, according to PennDOT.

During the work, the crosswalk at South Pugh Street will be closed. Pedestrians approaching College Avenue from Pugh Street will follow a detour to the crosswalk at McAllister Street.

The Centre Area Transportation Authority bus stop near the intersection of College Avenue and South Allen Street will be closed. CATA advises affected riders that the following alternative stops may be used:

• All riders are encouraged to use the bus stop at Pattee Library.
• Riders on the CC, NV, RP or UP routes can use the stop on East College Avenue at Atherton Hall. Due to congestion in this area, only riders using these four routes should use this stop.
• Riders on the AC route are encouraged to use either the stop on East Beaver Avenue at Schlow Library/CATA Office or the stop at the Walker Building.

Riders can expect delays on all routes operating along College Avenue during the work.

“After several years of wear and tear, the pavement at the College & Allen bus stop is in critical need of repair, and we appreciate PennDOT scheduling the repair work,” CATA CEO Todd Horsley said. “We also realize that the temporary stop closure and traffic mitigation will inconvenience our riders, and we want to thank everyone in advance for their patience while the pavement is being fixed”.

For Campus Shuttle via College Avenue riders the closest alternative stops are East College Avenue at Hiester Street and Burrowes Road at Reber Building.

The bus lane replacement is part of a larger PennDOT resurfacing project to improve the ride quality and extend the service life of Route 26 between Atherton and High streets in State College. Resurfacing work on Beaver Avenue will occur during 2027 construction season.
