The National Collegiate Athletic Association wants to subpoena former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno’s daughter.
This is the second subpoena the NCAA has recently announced that it intends to serve against members of the Paterno family. Last week attorneys for the NCAA filed a notice of their intent to subpoena George Scott Paterno, son of Joe Paterno, for a mountain of documents.
The estate of the late Joe Paterno — alongside his son Jay Paterno and former Penn State assistant football coach William Kenney — is currently suing the NCAA in Centre County court. The plaintiffs claim that the NCAA’s actions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal significantly lessened the value of the Paterno estate.
But the NCAA is clearly preparing to dispute that claim. Their attorneys want to see a wide range of financial records about Joe Paterno and his estate.
From Mary Kay Paterno-Hort specifically, the NCAA wants to see “all communications regarding the value of Coach Paterno’s assests, financial net worth, or the financial net worth of Coach Paterno’s estate.”
The NCAA goes on to ask for a wide range of financial details, including Joe Paterno’s pay-stubs and tax returns, records of the sales and profits from Paterno-themed merchandise, and information about Paterno’s investments and other sources of income.
Much like the subpoena pending against Joe Paterno’s son, George Scott-Paterno, the subpoena against Paterno-Hort also asks for all documents she has related to the Freeh report, the NCAA’s consent decree and Sandusky himself.
Attorneys for the Paterno estate have 20 days to raise objections to the proposed subpoena.
