A new threat reporting system required for all schools in Pennsylvania has handled more than 5,000 tips since it was introduced in January.
The Safe 2 Say Something program is mandated for all K-12 schools and sends tips to a 24-hour call center at the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office with the goal of responding to troubling behavior, unsafe school situations and other serious issues such as suicide threats. About a third of the tips received so far were serious enough to notify police and school officials.
The system can be used through a phone call, email or smartphone app.
Will Stout, State College Area School District assistant superintendent for secondary education, said that after training was conducted for students and faculty, the district saw a spike in tips.
