News Wrap: Wake-Up Call (3/16/10)

SCASD Schedule: The State College School Board voted last night to approve the calendar for the 2010-11 academic year, which includes two days of spring break that run at the same time as Penn State’s break.

Students will have no class on the Monday and Tuesday of that week, which is March 7-11, the Centre Daily Times reported. 

“I’m not closing the door on ever having an aligned spring break,” said Superintendent Richard Mextorf. “It’s just in this particular year, it didn’t work out real well.”

State High Basketball: The State High girls’ basketball team takes the court tonight at 7:30 to face Baldwin in the the second round of the race to the state title. The game will be held at Richland High School in Johnstown. 

Lady Lions: The Penn State Lady Lions (17-13, 8-10) will return to the postseason for the first time in five years after being selected to host Hofstra (19-13, 11-7 CAA) in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Thursday, March 18 at the Bryce Jordan Center. The game time will be announced Tuesday.

WNIT first round tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16 through Penn State Athletics. This is Penn State’s 23rd postseason bid and second appearance in the WNIT after winning the inaugural title in 1998.

Morrison Speech: Toni Morrison, award-winning author of ‘Song of Solomon’ and many other great works, will be speaking at 8 p.m. April 7 at Eisenhower Auditorium. Tickets, if needed, will be free.

Angelou Speech: Maya Angelou is drawing quite a crowd. Organizers expect the poet’s 8 p.m. March 23 speech to sell out, though tickets are still available, according to the Collegian.
