A State College woman suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash early Thursday morning.

Borough police responded at about 2:15 a.m. to North Atherton Street at the Hillcrest Avenue intersection, where the 28-year-old female driver of a northbound Ford Edge crossed into the opposing travel lane, colliding head-on with a southbound tractor-trailer, according to a release.

Police assisted Centre LifeLink EMS in extracting the unconscious driver from the Ford. She was taken by ambulance to a medical helicopter and flown to UPMC Altoona, to be treated for serious injuries.

The woman later regained consciousness, police wrote. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 63-year-old man from Altoona, was not injured.

Police said both vehicles suffered disabling damage in the crash and were towed from the scene.

The crash prompted road closures on North Atherton Street for several hours Thursday morning, according to Centre Region Emergency Management. The road has since reopened.

The cause of Thursday’s crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the State College Police Department by calling (814) 234-7150, sending an email or submitting an anonymous tip.
