A group dedicated to supporting the community is working to help some of our youngest community members.
The newest graduates of a program called Leadership Centre County are holding an online auction to benefit the soon-to-be-opened Centre County Child Advocacy Center.
The center will be a haven for young abuse victims — a place where they can come for evaluation and treatment. It will bring together a variety of experts who will take a multidisciplinary approach to child abuse cases.
Child care advocates, including psychologists, police investigators and medical technicians will all be working together. The idea is to reduce the stress many children feel when confronted with what can be a scary experience. Instead of having to tell their story over and over again, child abuse victims will only have to be interviewed one time.
The Leadership Centre County class of 2013 is auctioning off dozens of items including tables, chairs, appliances, framed prints, metal desks, cherry murphy beds, lamps, refrigerators and storage cabinets. All of the items were donated by the Mount Nittany Medical Center. The hospital is also donating space at its facility in Bellefonte to house the child advocacy center.
The goal is to raise $10,000. The money will be used to furnish the center’s waiting room.
An auction preview will be held at the Mount Nittany Medical Center on Monday, Oct. 28 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The hospital is located at 1800 E. Park Ave., State College, PA. (Look for the signs.)
The auction closes Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 9 p.m.
Purchased items will be available for pickup at Mount Nittany Medical Center on Monday, Nov. 11 from 4 p.m. until 8 pm.
