Ten Penn State alumni are shooting for a new World Record to benefit The Kevin Dare Foundation, the charity announced.
In late August, the team will attempt a 1,000-mile relay in under a record-time of 99 hours, 3 minutes and 27 seconds.
Dare, a former Penn State pole vaulter, died in 2002 at the Big Ten Championships after suffering a head injury.
The runners will start at the exact spot of Dare’s accident at the University of Minnesota and try to end at Penn State’s track facility.
“We’re planning on each runner covering five miles in turn, which will allow us a bit over four hours to recover before we have to run again,” Ryan Foster, one of the runners, said in a press release.
To break the record, each runner will have to sustain a mile pace of 5:57.
All money raised will benefit the foundation, which provides scholarships to severely injured or ill high school student athletes.
“All of us have been a student-athlete at some time,” Foster said. “For some of us it was how we paid our way through college. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like to have that taken away. We can definitely sympathize with those who won’t ever get to have that opportunity.”
