Penn State basketball head coach Patrick Chambers and plenty of his fellow head coaches will tee-off on cancer this Friday as part of the 18th Annual Coaches Versus Cancer golf tournament.
Five-time NBA Champion Ron Harper will join Chambers in one foursome at the Penn State Blue and White Golf Courses. More than 300 golfers and 60 groups are participating in the tournament.
The annual event began in 1996. Last year, CVC-Penn State topped the $2 million mark in fundraising.
Chambers and Harper will be auctioned off as part of the Thursday night Sponsor/Captain Reception with the pair joining the highest bidder’s foursome for his or her tee time Friday. Harper played 15 NBA seasons with four teams and was a part of five league championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.
In addition to Chambers, six additional Penn State head coaches – Josh Brandwene (women’s hockey), Missy Doherty (women’s lacrosse), Greg Nye (men’s golf), Mark Pavlik (men’s gymnastics), Jeff Thompson (women’s gymnastics) and Bob Warming (men’s soccer) — will join the ranks of the Friday golfers. Overall, more than 20 former Penn State basketball and football players will take their talents to the green, in addition to former coaches Jerry Dunn and Bruce Parkhill.
The annual event is just a small part of the year-round program which has several events coming up on the calendar including the State College Brew Expo (Aug. 16 at Tussey Mountain), NInth Annual CVC Reverse Car Drawing (Sept. 18 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park), Coaches vs. Cancer “Band Together” Day (TBA at Nittany Lion home game) and the 16th Annual CVC 5K Fun Run/Walk (TBA, PSU campus).
