Penn State basketball got the win it needed on Saturday, knocking off Marshall 90-77. The Nittany Lions opened the game on a 11-1 run and never looked back, getting early contributions from guards DJ Newbill and Tim Frazier.
Marshall struggled to find its shot early. Penn State was led on the defensive end by forward Donovon Jack who recorded 7 blocks on the night. Jack also chipped in 7 rebounds and 18 points.
“I thought he was due,” Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said after the game. “Coaches have gut feelings about things and I thought he was going to have a good game today. He had good preparation, good practice, good walkthrough, he shot the ball very well and he knows I have great confidence in him.”
“We just need more consistency now. But he played really well. Seven blocks in a game is incredible. That’s an athletic team. It’s not like he’s doing it against anybody; he’s doing it against Marshall.”
The Nittany Lions were balanced offensively for yet another outing after losing back-to-back games to Ole Miss and Pittsburgh.
Penn State would take a 47-32 lead into the half and the Nittany Lions would never let the Thundering Herd get any closer, opening up a 27 point lead with 10:35 to go in the game.
The Nittany Lions were led Ross Travis’ 20 points while Newbill, and Frazier contributed 17 and 11 points with Frazier dishing out 9 assists as well. Brandon Taylor added 10 points to round out a Nittany Lion starting five all in double figures. The Nittany Lions have now scored 70 or more points in all six home games this season and have tallied 80 or more in six games overall this year.
