Penn State basketball announced this week that current assistant strength and conditioning coach Brandon Spayd would replace Brad Pantall as the Nittany Lions’ primary coach for strength and conditioning.
Pantall has overseen the strength and conditioning programs for both the Nittany Lion and Lady Lion basketball programs for the past seven seasons. He will continue to lead the strength and conditioning program for Lady Lion basketball while assuming duties with some of Penn State’s other athletic programs.
“I would like to thank Brad Pantall for his valuable contributions to the Nittany Lion basketball program,” Head coach Patrick Chambers said. “He is an excellent coach and a true professional.”
For Spayd, the appointment marks the completion of a lifelong goal.
“This opportunity is a lifelong goal of mine within the profession,” Spayd said. “I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to oversee the Penn State Men’s Basketball physical development program and even more importantly for a Coach, Staff, Program, and University as we have at Penn State is a dream come true. I look forward to all the hard work and effort which is required for success and am lucky to have inherited a great group of student athletes.”
An assistant strength and conditioning coach working with both Penn State men’s and women’s basketball programs for the last three seasons, Spayd will take over as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for Nittany Lion basketball effective immediately.
Chambers will continue to look to regroup the program following a difficult 2012 campaign. The Nittany Lions will return the Big Ten’s top two leading scorers in guards Jermaine Marshall and DJ Newbill. All-Big Ten guard Tim Frazier will return for a fifth year of eligibility in 2013-14 following a season ending achilles injury.
