NEW YORK — Penn State will not move forward with any new building projects at University Park until its budget situation is more clear and ample funding for the projects is fully secured, the university trustees agreed Friday.
According to their decision, the university administration may move forward with several planned projects — including a Hetzel Union Building expansion, South Halls work and a Pattee Library renovation project — but only when administrators have determined that the financial outlook has stabilized sufficiently.
‘Moving forward in a normal fashion is just not possible,’ Senior Vice President for Finance Al Horvath told university board members, meeting in New York.
He called the building freeze ‘unprecedented’ at Penn State but said the university must proceed with abundant caution, particularly in light of Gov. Tom Corbett’s state budget proposal. The proposal would cut 52 percent of the university’s state funding.
