Penn State Board of Trustees Election Continues to Draw Interest, Votes

With just one week left to cast votes, there’s no shortage of interest in Penn State’s Board of Trustees election. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday 26,861 alumni had cast votes — well above historical averages. Just shy of 5,000 people voted in the past week.

A large number of candidates have run for the board in the past two elections, part of the backlash generated by the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Thirty-seven candidates are now vying for three alumni seats on the board. Many of those candidates are running as reformers, who want to change the way the board does business. Some promise they’ll fight NCAA sanctions against the university and work to restore Joe Paterno’s reputation.

Two of the candidates are incumbents, Paul Suhey and Stephanie Deviney. A total of 39 candidates was running but two dropped out of the race.

The alumni election runs through 9 a.m., May 2. Results will be announced May 3, during a board of trustees meeting on the Penn State campus.
