Penn State Dining Puts Ice Cream on the Line in Super Bowl Wager with UMass

Penn State Dining is laying it all on the line this weekend in a friendly wager over the Super Bowl with University of Massachusetts Amherst’s auxiliary enterprises director, Ken Toong.

Toong has made similar bets seven other times when the Patriots made the Super Bowl. His record is 5-2, including a win against Penn State in 2004 when the Patriots narrowly bested the Eagles 32-29.

“Penn State campus dining is pleased to accept UMass’s challenge for this year’s Super Bowl championship,” Penn State Residential Dining Director Lisa Wandel said in a press release. “Should the New England Patriots ‘scoop’ the Philadelphia Eagles, we will send three containers of our students’ most treasured flavors of our world famous Berkey Creamery ice cream: Death by Chocolate, WPSU Coffee Break, and Vanilla Bean.”

When there’s ice cream stake, you know it’s serious. If the Eagles win, UMass dining will send five gallons of its New England seafood chowder to be shared at Penn State.

“We are excited to continue the tradition of friendly wagers with our dining colleagues,” Toong said. “It will be a tough, hard-fought game, but I believe our Patriots will pull out another close one. May the best team win.”

Toong has also upped the ante and vowed not to serve Philadelphia Cream Cheese this week, and has renamed Philly cheesesteak grinders served at UMass to be “New England” grinders. He predicts the Pats will win 24-17.
