Penn State Football: As Program Rises, So Too Do Secondary Market Prices

One of the best ways to judge the value of program, at least in the eyes of fans willing to cough up the money to see a team play in person: the starting prices on the secondary market in the middle of the summer.

The reason? There hasn’t been a single game played yet, nothing to sway the opinion of the how the season has gone beyond hopes and expectations. You might be eternally optimistic about Penn State, but how much you’re willing to pay has a lot more to do with your actual brain than your heart. The better things might go, the more you might be willing to pay. Of course, so too does the schedule itself.

So for the third straight season its time to get a gauge of that very market. In a world where tickets can show up on your phone in an instant, it’s easier and easier to get your hands on tickets.

You just might have to pay more for them now.

For example the lowest available ticket on Ticketmaster for Penn State’s home opener is the highest it has been in the past three years at the mid summer mark. Whereas the price of a Pitt ticket both home or away, has stayed about the same.

Big Ten tickets? The cheapest ticket right now is $255 to see Ohio State at Beaver Stadium, a number that will probably drop but not by far with the Buckeyes early on the schedule.

Everything else is up too. The cheapest ticket right now is a $50 entry fee to see Maryland at the end of the year. Everything else is higher. Compare that to 2017 when a ticket to see Rutgers at Beaver Stadium was as low as 26 bucks.

All told it’s going to cost you an average of $86 a ticket to see Penn State at home this year, take out Ohio State and that’s still $49 a pop. That’s compared to 2016 when even with Ohio State in the average it would cost you $63 a ticket.
