Penn State tight end Mike Gesicki was injured late in the first half of Penn State’s 45-14 victory over Indiana on Saturday. The senior was hurt at the end of an 11-yard reception, his third of the game.
While Nittany Lion head coach James Franklin offered no update following the game, Gesicki did walk off the field under his own power but was favoring his right side in the area of his ribs. Gesicki did not take the field or the sideline in the second half.
In his absence Penn State turned to Tom Pancoast who hauled in one pass for five yards in the second half.
It’s safe to say the Nittany Lions will want their potential All-American tight end back as soon as possible, but if Gesicki has suffered a potential prolonged injury now may be the best time to get it. Penn State travels to Chicago next week to face Northwestern before heading into the bye prior to a pivotal meeting against Michigan.
This in theory would give Gesicki 21 days between games if he misses Penn State Week 6 showdown in Evantson, Ill. Probably less if Franklin wants him to practice even a few days prior to taking the field again.
Penn State is generally silent on the injury front, something unlikely to change with rising stakes each week.
