Penn State’s indoor practice facility is set for turf replacement according to documents on the Office of Physical Plant’s website.
Holuba Hall, which was completed in 1987 had its turf last replaced in 2003. The artificial surface typically lasts 8-12 years according to Penn State officials and is replaced largely due to wear and tear in addition to safety. The field is used by the football program as well as 11 other Penn State programs in addition to sports camps, clinics and outside events.
According to documents, the new project will include the removal of the current turf starting on April 25 with completion slated for around June 24. The project is currently out to bit with a cost estimate of approximately $500,000.
The installation of the new turf is slated for a start date is June 27 with completion scheduled for July 29. The installation cost estimate is roughly $750,000.
Turf replacement is the most recent of a handful of Holuba Hall upgrades including replacement of lighting, security/access controls, fueling station commissary, interior painting, installation of interior filming platforms and a storage room addition.
Penn State is is also in the process of major renovations of the Lasch Football Building although upgrading the Holuba Hall turf has long been on coach James Franklin’s list of desired improvements.
While the final plans for the replacement have yet to be finalized, Franklin has also petitioned in the past for a reconfigured turf surface to accommodate 100 yard fields.
