Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin was never a fan of the term walk-on, but he has no problem being named a finalist for the Burlsworth Award, presented to the nation’s most outstanding player who started his career as a walk-on.

‘Walk-on is just a stupid term to begin with,’ he said earlier in the season. ‘I don’t agree with it because you do the same exact things players with scholarships do. It’s just unfortunate you don’t get paid by the school.’

McGloin has since earned a scholarship, and this year put himself in position to win the award after setting the school record for career touchdown passes (46) and setting single-season records for yardage (3,266), completions (270) and attempts (446). His 24 touchdowns tied Daryll Clark’s single-season mark, and he completed 60.5 percent of his passes this year.

The winner will be announced Dec. 3. Fans can vote once for McGloin daily via the AT&T Fan Vote. McGloin had a 3,400-vote lead over Michigan’s Jordan Kovacs by the time this was published. San Jose State’s David Quessenberry is the third finalist.
