Penn State is at the halfway point of its spring season.
It doesn’t sound like we’re any closer to finding out who may have an inside track to start at quarterback this fall.
‘Right now, there is no separation,’ Penn State coach Bill O’Brien said Wednesday afternoon on the Big Ten coaches spring teleconference.
O’Brien backtracked a bit on an earlier comment to ESPN about cutting the three-quarterback derby to two by the end of spring. Fifth-year senior Matt McGloin, junior Rob Bolden and redshirt sophomore Paul Jones have been splitting first-team reps.
O’Brien is looking for better decision-making, accuracy and grasp of the offense.
‘I’m not sure if it will come right at the end of spring practice,’ O’Brien said. ‘It’s hard to get three guys the reps you need to get for one and two guys to be the starter.
‘At the end of spring ball we’ll have a better idea of which one or two guys will be the starter. Hopefully we can do that at the end, if not, then we head into training camp with three guys getting reps.’
In other news Wednesday:
Former Penn State safeties coach Kermit Buggs joined the Lock Haven University coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
He first became a member of the Nittany Lions staff in 2003 as a graduate assistant.
