Penn State Football: Pitt Anxious To Renew Series

Penn State and Pitt will play the third game of a four-year series this season and the Panthers don’t want to be done with their cross-state rival just yet.

According to Jerry DiPaola, Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke is hopeful the rivalry will be renewed yet again.

‘I’ve been in as much contact as I can with Sandy (Barbour) at Penn State. We have an agreement before them to play four games, starting in 2026.’ DiPaola repoted Lyke saying. According to Lyke, Penn State has yet to respond to the proposed agreement that would restart the series eight years from now.

‘We have other people who want to play us.’ Lyke reportedly said, stating that Pitt won’t be waiting on Penn State forever.

If history is any indication, this deal has been on the table for a while and Penn State isn’t in any hurry to answer the call. Nittany Lion athletic director Sandy Barbour said back in December prior to the Fiesta Bowl that there had been no progress made with the series after Lyke told a local paper a deal was almost done.

‘A contract very close to being done and being sent to Penn State to extend the football deal.” Lyke said at the time.

“There has been no progress at this point in time,” Barbour would later tell reporters while in Phoenix.

Penn State is currently 1-1 in the newest iteration of the series. The Nittany Lions lost 42-39 in Pittsburgh in 2016 before winning 33-14 back in Beaver Stadium during the 2017 season.

The final game of the currently series will mark the 100th game played between the two teams.
