Football season is getting closer and closer and the sports books all across the world are getting ready for plenty of action this fall.
To be clear, there is no reason to gamble your money away on anything, let alone the unpredictable landscape of college football.
That being said, Vegas and the magical oddsmakers of the world have an interesting knack for getting things right more often than not.
So while throwing away your hard-earned money isn’t advised, taking a look at what Vegas thinks about Penn State offers a unique perspective on the upcoming season.
Perhaps most importantly, Penn State isn’t favored to win the Big Ten. This undoubtedly does not come as a surprise to anyone who has spent the offseason away from the kool aid. Even so, at 15-1 odds, Penn State is the 6th most likely to finish on top the conference. Ohio State takes home that honor with a 1-2 margin. Michigan State comes in second at 13-4.
Sixth place isn’t all that bad considering how many different ways Penn State’s season could have gone last year.
In a similar vein, perhaps the most intriguing bet you shouldn’t make: will Penn State win more than seven games this year? That’s something that books across the world are asking fans and it’s an intriguing question.
Can Penn State win eight games? Vegas seems to think so.
With a season opener at Temple and then five straight at home the path to 6-0 is certainly very possible if not likely. On the flip side it’s an unknown how much better – if at all – Penn State will be this year. The Nittany Lions will have almost certainly improved. But will they be good enough to avoid the unexpected upset?
Eight wins in the regular season isn’t at all out of the question, but neither is another bumpy road to bowl eligibility.
And all of this starts in September when Penn State’s first game of the year takes place at Lincoln Financial Field against the Temple Owls.
Vegas puts Penn State a five point favorite in that game which ought to be a pretty fair guess given the rust that most teams show in Game 1 and the ever improving quality of the Owls. So per usual, Vegas knows what it’s doing.
