Following a spirited two-game series against No. 8 Union in Schenectady N.Y., the Nittany Lions will return home for an exhibition series against ACHA foe Arizona State on Friday and Saturday night at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. Both games start at 7:30.
‘I’m happy with where we are right now,’ coach Guy Gadowsky said. ‘We’re getting a lot of information about our program after each of these games and we’re pleased with where we are right now.’
Penn State suffered two consecutive losses over the weekend to Union, falling 2-0 and 4-1. Union, a 2012 Frozen Four participant, is far and away the most difficult game on the Nittany Lions’ schedule. Despite the losses, Penn State was competitive deep into both games.
Freshman goaltender Matthew Skoff was impressive in both games, making a career-high 42 saves in the second game of the series. Skoff currently ranks 12th in the country in save percentage (.934).
‘I thought we played our best weekend of the season,’ Gadowsky said. ‘There is no shame in losing to a team like that. I was happy with our effort and really pleased we could be competitive in both games.’
Penn State will now focus on Arizona State for a two-game homestand before heading on the road to face Holy Cross and Fredonia State.
The Sun Devils compete as a Division I club team and will enter the weekend as the nation’s No. 1-ranked club team with an 18-0-0 record. The series against Arizona State is one of four exhibition events this season. The Nittany Lions will take on the United State’s Under-18 National Team as well as ACHA foes Ohio and Oklahoma later in the year.

Penn State added five players to its future roster during the November early signing period. The additions include forwards David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.), Zach Saar (Plainwell, Mich.) and Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.), defenseman David Thompson (Glen Mills, Pa.) and goaltender Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.).
All five will join the Nittany Lions for the 2013-14 season.
