Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Third Period Buries Holy Cross 7-1

How It Happened:

A scoreless but physical first period saw Penn State lead the shot count 15-5 although the quality scoring chances were far fewer for both teams. The Nittany Lions would continue to dominate the pace of play in the second period though and a Casey Bailey goal with just over 6 minutes remaining in the period would opening the scoring. Curtis Loik would add another tally only minutes later to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission.

The third period opened with two quick goals and eventually three more tallies as Penn State piled on thanks to sharp passing a good skating.

Penn State would win the game and the shot count 44-30.

Turning Point: 

Leading 2-0, Penn State scored two quick goals in the opening 5 minutes of play to turn a close game into a 4-0 blowout en route to an eventual 5 goal third period. Eric Scheid and David Glen would pick up the tallies during that span.

Player of the Game: 

Freshman Scott Conway picked up two goals and two assists in his first big game in the young season and his young tenure at Penn State. Conway scored one of Penn State’s two power play goals and has continued to impress as one of the three newcomers to the roster. Matt Skoff was also solid in net yet again making 29 saves and continuing to be a calm presence on the defensive end of the ice.

Stat of the Game: 

12 different Nittany Lions registered a point during Sunday’s victory with six picking up goals and nine registering 3 or more shots on net. It was an all around team effort on the ice and in the box score. Casey Bailey led the team with 6 shots on goal.

Penn State’s weekend sweep is also the first in Pegula Ice Arena history.
