Following an impressive winter sports season, Penn State has improved to No. 2 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standing – a six spot climb from the fall sports campaign.

Thanks in part to a fourth straight wrestling National Championship, Penn State athletics accrued 351 points this winter for a total of 647.5 points. That’s second only to Stanford by 11 points. Stanford has won the Directors’ Cup 18 consecutive times.

Penn State’s third place finish in fencing and ninth place finish in men’s indoor track and field helped propel the Nittany Lions to within fighting distance of the lead.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup recognizes the performances of collegiate athletics in 20 different sports – 10 from each gender — and assigns point values to recognize the top programs in the country. Penn State is 64.5 points ahead of the third place contender (Notre Dame), and the list includes seven Big Ten teams in the top 25.

Penn State still has nine more sports to compete in to try to unseat the defending champions.
