Penn State men’s lacrosse graduates Nick Aponte and Matt Florence are taking their talents to the sport’s highest level after being drafted by Major League Lacrosse franchises Sunday.
Aponte was selected No. 30 overall in the fourth round by the Chesapeake Bayhawks, while Florence was picked up by the Denver Outlaws with the No. 72 overall pick in the eighth round.
Aponte, an attacker from West Islip, N.Y., finished second on the team with 57 points (24 goals) this season. Florence, a midfielder out of Greenwood Village, Colo., logged 15 points and seven ground balls as a senior. His friends and family won’t have to travel to see him play professionally. The Bayhawks, on the other hand, are located in the lacrosse hotbed of Annapolis, Md.
The No. 7 seed Nittany Lions fell to Towson at home, 12-8, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament — their first appearance in the 16-team field since 2013. Jeff Tambroni’s squad (12-4) tied the program record for regular-season wins and return plenty of talent next spring.
