Vice President for Student Affairs Damon Sims met with fraternity presidents this weekend at the Nittany Lion Inn to discuss the Kappa Delta Rho situation and confirmed that the university and the Interfraternity Council will conduct a review of the Greek system at Penn State.
“It was partly about the KDR situation, and the university’s response to it. And an opportunity for me to respond to any questions that they may have, and then respond to any questions that they may have about President Barron’s suggestion of a review of the Greek system,” Sims said.
On Friday, Sims did not provide a timeline for the University’s disciplinary response to members of the fraternity. At the meeting, Sims detailed who the University would like to involve in the process and its objectives.
“Only that it was going to be comprehensive, involve every constituency, including lots of students, alumni, national organizations, and university leaders and we really want to be focused on where we could find improvement in the Greek system and strengthen what already is a good Greek system and make it better, if we possibly could,” Sims said.
Sims was unsure if members of Kappa Delta Rho were in attendance at the meeting, although he previously stated that he extended an invitation to the fraternity along with a request to speak to members this week.
“Our meeting with Damon resulted in an excellent start to an ongoing conversation about how the university can work in partnership with the fraternity community to initiate positive, meaningful changes. There was resounding agreement amongst the Chapter Presidents denouncing the actions of Kappa Delta Rho as unacceptable and unrepresentative of the Greek community at Penn State,” IFC president Rick Groves said.
According to Groves, the conversation to review the Greek system was already underway within the Interfraternity Council and the meeting jump started formal talks between fraternity presidents and the university.
Penn State president Eric Barron has also suggested there is a need to review Penn State’s Greek system, and says that fraternity and sorority members will be an important part of the conversation.
“I doubt that our many fine members of greek organizations are satisfied about this story and the attention its getting,” Barron said.
