Penn State wrestling clinched its fifth team National Championship in six years on Saturday morning, hours before any of its five wrestlers even wrestled in the finals. Halfway through the consolation rounds, Penn State clinched the Championship with a score of 114.0.
Head Coach Cael Sanderson led the Nittany Lions to their fifth National Championship in six years based off of the bonus points the team received throughout the week. Penn State sent five wrestlers into the championship matches and qualified six All-Americans thanks to a total of six majors, four technical falls and five pins
After going a perfect 16-0 on the season, winning the NWCA Dual Meet Championship, and the Big Ten Tournament, the Nittany Lions wrapped up the trio of championships with the 2016 National Championship. This season could also provide a path to repeating what the Nittany Lions did from 2011 to 2014. In those four years, they won four straight Big Ten titles and four consecutive National Championships. The young talent the Nittany Lions have to offer makes the future very bright for them, but for now, they will enjoy their incredible season with a National Championship celebration.
Zane Retherford and and Nico Megaludis both won individual titles at the 149 and 125 weight classes respectively.
