A Centre County man is facing charges including attempted homicide after he allegedly threatened to kill a woman while holding a knife and assaulting her Monday morning at a Spring Township home.
Jason L. Hannon, 44, was arrested after barricading himself inside the house on the 800 block of Halfmoon Street for about an hour, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Township police were dispatched to the home at 7:40 a.m. after a passerby heard a woman yelling for help. Officers arrived to find a woman outside who was visibly upset and bleeding from her hands and face.
The woman told police that a dispute began when she confronted Hannon about playing loud music. After he grabbed her in a bear hug, she ran and Hannon followed her while wielding a knife, forced her onto a bed and shoved pajama pants in her mouth to prevent her from breathing, according to the affidavit.
Hannon made repeated threats during the encounter, saying “This is all your fault,” and “I’m going to kill you then make you kill me,” police wrote.
The woman said she feared for her life, and that Hannon blocked her from exiting the home, strangled her and pinned her to the floor, according to the affidavit. She said she considered jumping out a window, and ultimately left when police arrived.
Police wrote that she had a swollen lip, handprints on her neck, scratches and a defensive knife wound on her hand.
Hannon refused to come out of the home until dropping a bloody knife out the window and surrendering to police just before 9 a.m., according to the affidavit. He had a self-inflicted stab wound in the chest and was treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center before being taken for preliminary arraignment.
He admitted to being involved in an altercation but told police that he “blacked out,” according to the affidavit.
In addition to attempted homicide, he is charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and strangulation; misdemeanor counts of unlawful restraint, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person; and a summary count of harassment.
Hannon was arraigned early Monday afternoon by District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker and denied bail. He is jailed at the Centre County Correctional Facility.
In a Facebook post, Spring Township police thanked each law enforcement agency in Centre County for their assistance. They also praised the passerby who called 911.
“They should be commended for stepping in and making a difference in our community,” the department wrote. “If you see something, or hear something, say something.”
