Ferguson Township police have been notably tight-lipped with details on the murder investigation of 60-year-old Pine Grove Mills resident Jean Tuggy.

The police department has kept its cards close to vest in the week and change since Tuggy’s body was discovered in her home, dead after suffering a gunshot wound to the face.

Citizen of Ferguson Township and the Pine Grove Mills neighborhood are reasonably concerned about their safety after a neighbor was shot in cold blood in her residence. The lack of details from police has been a cause for concern, but a statement from the police department was released on Thursday morning reminding the community that public safety is their top priority.

‘Many residents have expressed disappointment that law enforcement has not released additional details about the case. We understand your disappointment, but ask you to understand that it would be counterproductive to discuss the details of the incident in the public venue,’ police said. ‘These details are crucial to the investigative process.’

The statement explained that if someone comes forward with information or a confession, police can confirm their story by comparing it to what they know from investigating the crime scene. Keeping certain details private allow the police department to retain its ability to vet incoming information — information that only the investigators and the perpetrator have right now.

The police added that any information on the case that could potentially be beneficial to public safety would be released and has been released.

‘We want to assure residents that whenever information becomes known that impacts their safety and their ability to protect themselves, we will provide that information in a timely manner,’ police said.

Police again stressed the important steps that area residents can take to ensure their safety.

‘We encourage residents to continue practicing standard, personal and home security measures — keeping your doors and windows locked, using security lights, being aware of your surroundings as well as vigilant,’ they said. ‘Never, ever open your door to someone you do not know or trust.’

At a press conference on Wednesday, district attorney Stacy Parks Miller announced that a $1,000 reward is available for information leading to an arrest in the murder case. In order to be eligible for the reward, the tip must be submitted via e-mail to tip@centrecountycrimestoppers.org.
