Authorities have identified a suspect in the killing of a Pennsylvania State Trooper who was a Penn State University graduate and officials are seeking the public’s help to locate the alleged killer.
Police say Eric Matthew Frein, 31, of Canadensis, is responsible for the murder of Cpl. Bryon Dickson and attempted murder of a second trooper, Alex Douglass. The two men were shot just before 11 p.m. Friday outside the Blooming Grove barracks in Pike County.
Police describe the suspect a white male who is about 6-feet 1-inch tall, weighs about 165 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes.
Authorities say the suspect is armed and dangerous.
A $75,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest through Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers.
Anyone with information on this crime can call Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers at 1-866-326-7256. All callers remain anonymous.
Authorities say they identified Frein as a suspect after a resident reported seeing a vehicle slightly submerged in a retention pond while the resident was hiking in the woods roughly two miles from the barracks. The witness called 911 and police investigated.
Police say evidence located in the vehicle matched evidence located at the shooting scene and additional evidence was located at the suspect’s home.
Dickson, 38, graduated from Penn State in 2003 with a degree in criminal justice, according to Penn State spokesperson Lisa Powers. He was also a Schreyer Scholar and a Lion Ambassador at Worthington Scranton campus.
“The president, on behalf of the University, is sending condolences from the entire Penn State community. This tragic event, perpetrated by cowards, is hard to even imagine,” says Powers. “Our hearts go out to family, colleagues and friends of Trooper Dickson. Our prayers are with all law enforcement officials who put their lives on the line for the communities they serve.”
Dickson is survived by his wife and two children.
