Updated 5:16 p.m. March 4.

State College police determined after an investigation on Wednesday afternoon that a bone uncovered by a downtown construction worker was not human, but rather from a cow.

Chief Joseph Merrill said police were assisted by the Centre County Coroner’s Office and the Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute, which identified the bone’s origin as cattle.

A construction worker unearthed the partial bone while doing excavation work at about 2:55 p.m. on the 100 block of South Fraser Street, according to a news release. Police said earlier on Wednesday afternoon that they were investigating whether it was human or animal.

Multiple police officers could be seen in a driveway and open space between 110 and 112 S. Fraser St. since mid-afternoon Wednesday.
