No one was cited or arrested in the annual Mifflin Streak Sunday night on the University Park campus, Penn State confirmed Monday.

Starting around 10 p.m. Sunday, dozens of students shed their clothes and darted down Mifflin Road between Pollock and McKean roads. A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 spectators turned out to watch the streak, a pre-finals-week tradition that dates to 1977.

Campus police and student-affairs staff monitored the event, Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said. It ended about 12:30 a.m.

The university ‘took the same approach as last year: We don’t condone or promote the event, but we are certainly aware that some students will participate,’ Powers wrote in an e-mail message. ‘University police are on hand to respond if necessary to ensure safety and security.

‘They would only plan to intervene if there is any risk to students involved or to bystanders, or if the event becomes really disruptive,’ Powers wrote.

In years past, the university heard concerns from students who found the streak troubling. In particular, victims of sexual violence ‘have expressed real anxiety to past Mifflin Streaks — so we are sensitive to those individuals and their very legitimate concerns,’ Powers wrote.

‘We consulted with women’s groups and others — and found there was no indication of real opposition this year,’ she wrote.

Some streakers in prior years have faced charges of open lewdness and disorderly conduct. Streak-related charges were filed most recently in 2008, though a judge threw them out.
