A State College man was knocked unconscious in a South Atherton Street collision and taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center late Wednesday, State College police said.

It happened about 10 p.m. in front of the Atherton Hotel, on the 100 block, according to a crash report. A southbound Nissan Xterra, arriving at the hotel, turned into the path of a northbound Volkswagen Jetta, the report shows.

Multiple people at the scene said the Jetta appeared to have been speeding, according to the report. The cars wrecked outside the hotel, both sustaining substantial damage.

Neither driver was immediately charged or cited. The driver of the Xterra was identified as Tyler Marks, 18, of Dresher; the driver of the Jetta, Michael Wiebe, 22, of Birdsboro.

Two passengers were identified in the Jetta; one, in the Xterra. Only one passenger, Alexander Flocco, 22, of State College, was taken to the medical center for treatment, police said.

He had been riding in the Jetta and was knocked unconscious by a deploying airbag, police said. His injuries were not described as severe.

Wiebe complained of wrist pain and swelling but was not taken to the hospital, police said.
